Most of us know someone who has struggled with breast cancer, but fortunately there are a lot of success stories out there.
These are some of our favourite stars who also happen to be breast cancer survivors …
- CHRISTINA APPLEGATE
Actress Christina Applegate, known for her role on the TV show Married with Children, as well as a number of films including Anchorman and Bad Moms, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. Although the cancer affected only one of her breasts, Applegate opted for a double mastectomy because of a family history of the disease. She then went on to undergo reconstructive breast surgery as part of her treatment. She is reported as saying that support from other breast cancer survivors formed an important part of her treatment and recovery process. - SHERYL CROW
Singer Sherly Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 44 years old. Fortunately, the disease was detected at an early stage during a regular mammogram. The star underwent a lumpectomy as well as radiation therapy before her doctors confirmed that she was cancer-free. Early detection was key in Crow’s case, because she reportedly does not have a family history of the illness. This highlights the importance of annual mammograms — early detection often goes a long way in the successful treatment of breast cancer. - KYLIE MINOGUE
Pop star Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2005, and had to undergo surgery as well as chemotherapy as part of her treatment plan. Minogue underwent a partial mastectomy and has since been involved in a number of fundraising events and charities. In 2010, she was the face of the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign, while her fiancé at the time Joshua Sasse ran the 2016 London Marathon to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. - CYNTHIA NIXON
Best known for her role as Miranda on the TV show Sex and the City, Miranda Nixon was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. Nixon’s own mother had battled (and survived) the disease when Nixon was a child. She underwent surgery as well as radiation therapy, and since beating the illness, became an ambassador for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 2008, encouraging women to go for regular mammograms. - EDIE FALCO
Actress Edie Falco, known for role on The Soprano’s, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 while she was still working on the TV show. She underwent chemotherapy, which was successful in eliminating the cancer. After her experience with breast cancer, Falco went on to adopt two children.
If you have suffered from breast cancer yourself, or know someone who has, you may know that breast reconstruction is increasingly seen as a routine part of treatment in cases where a mastectomy is required. The procedure involves reconstructing the shape, volume, and feel of a breast, and typically requires the use of a flap (which is tissue moved from another part of the body), a silicone implant, or a combination of the two.
