Breast Reduction FAQ's
When to consider breast reduction?
While personal preference is an important reason to consider breast reduction surgery, there are medical implications to having breasts that are disproportionately large, which range from mild discomfort, to severe back pain and difficulty breathing.
If you experience any of the following problems, you should consider breast reduction surgery.
- Feeling weighed down or pulled forward by you breasts. Larger breasts are heavier and if your breasts are disproportionately large, they may also be too heavy for your body.
- Overly large breasts and their weight may affect your posture pulling you forward from the shoulders creating a hunched posture.
- Bad posture and the weight of overly large breasts combined can contribute to back and shoulder pain a common sign that your breasts may be too large for your frame.
- Difficulty finding clothes that fit comfortably. Although the fashion industry does play a part in the sizing and shape of clothing disproportionately large breast do make finding clothes and even underwear that fit right. Difficulty finding underwear that fits right is especially concerning as ill-fitting bras can aggravate back problems and feeling of being weighed down while cutting into the shoulders, under the breasts, and leaving scaring and dark marks.
- Difficulty breathing is one of the most severe signs of oversized breasts. Because of the extra weight on the chest, your breasts may make it difficult to breath especially during exercise and moderate to strenuous activity.
- Limited mobility and discomfort. Larger breasts are more likely to become pendulous and even with supportive underwear may move uncomfortable, sometimes even causing pain.
How does a breast reduction work?
There are two main techniques through which a breast reduction can be achieved. The choice of technique depends largely on your preferences and the type of results you and your surgeon are aiming to achieve.
Although surgical incisions do leave scarring, most of the scars should fade over time, making them almost invisible. These incisions allow your surgeon to remove excess skin and re-shape the breasts giving you a natural looking perk as well as undoing the sagging caused by the sudden reduction in volume of the breasts, as well as positioning the nipple and areola in a place that will look natural on the new size of the breast.
What are the benefits of breast reduction?
When considering the effects overly large breasts can have on your general health and comfort; the main benefits of a breast reduction are a reversal of those problems, including relief of back, shoulder and neck pain, reduced upper body weight which gives you the opportunity to correct your posture and improve your balance, as well as relieving the pressure on your chest which may cause breathing problems.
There are also cosmetic benefits to having a breast reduction, including the option to re-shape and lift your breasts, as well as reducing the likelihood of skin irritation and darkening underneath the breasts. A breast reduction can make movement, exercise and other activities easier for you by reducing the weight and size of your breasts which may hamper your movement.

Recovery: what to expect?
Post-Operative Care
Recovery from breast surgery is accelerated by rest and avoidance of strenuous activity. Ignoring this may cause pain, exacerbate discomfort or cause injury.
Immediately after surgery your breasts will be dressed and bandaged. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication as it is common to experience pain and discomfort post operatively. When bandages are removed you will need to wear a surgical bra. This will help alleviate strain on your recovering breasts.
Returning to work post-surgery
You may return to work once you no longer need the pain medication. However, it is advised that you minimise strenuous activity. As well as avoid underwire bras for four weeks as this may hamper the healing of both internal tissue.
With his tailor made attitude to plastic surgery, Dr Yang will discuss and plan post-operative consultations with each patient. This will allow him to monitor your recovery, answer any questions and see to and concerns you may have with your care.

What is liposuction breast reduction?
To achieve a reduction with minimal scaring, your Specialist Plastic Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgeon could use liposuction to remove excess fat from your breasts. This technique, although still an invasive surgical procedure offers minimal manipulation of the breast tissue and is focused purely on reducing the size and weight of the breasts.
Patients who wish to reduce their breast size and weight with minimal handling and restructuring of the breasts may prefer this option. However for those looking to reshape their breasts and increase firmness, a breast reduction is required.
