Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and reposition a woman’s breasts.
A breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) can help women with large breasts achieve a smaller cup size. For many, a breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is a last resort to ease discomfort cause, including back pain, neck pain or skin irritations.
At Samuel Yang Plastic surgery, we understand the importance of being comfortable to do the things you want to do and love the body you are in. Breast reduction surgery is performed with the upmost care and respect to the patient’s wishes, health and wellbeing.
When to consider breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty)?
Large breasts can cause medical problems such as back pain, bad posture, numbness and sleep issues.
Although medical concerns on their own are compelling, many women find that disproportionate breasts are also holding them back from participating in activities, sport and to some extent limits the style of clothes they can wear.
Choosing to change your breast size is a personal choice and can be an emotional one. As such, having the support of a professional medical team you can trust through this journey is important.
How does breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) work?
There are a number of different breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) surgical techniques available. The primary surgical technique focuses on the removal of excess skin and fat which may be a result of significant weight loss or pregnancy. This method allows your surgeon to create symmetry in shape, size and positioning. A less invasive method that offers less scarring may also be used, however, it does limit the surgeon’s ability to reshape the breast and is often used for smaller reductions.
During a personalised consultation, our highly skilled surgeon Dr Samuel Yang will discuss your surgical desires and recommend the best surgical approach to achieve your goals. As breasts make up a big part of a woman’s physical femininity, Dr Sam places a strong emphasis on retaining a natural, feminine shape.

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty)recovery and after care
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is an inpatient procedure. Dependent on your individual requirements, the procedure typically takes 2-3 hours under general aesthesia.
Post-surgery, you will wake up with a gauze dressing or surgical bra around your chest area. You may also have drainage tubes placed at your incision site. Minor discomfort and swelling is to be expected after the anaesthesia wears off. We’ll supply prescription pain medication to ease any discomfort. Dr Sam will monitor your progress and discharge you accordingly. You may be required to stay overnight in the hospital.
Taking your first shower is only advised on the second day after surgery where you can expect your breast to feel tender however this feeling should dissipate within weeks as the stiches are absorbed and inflammation fades.
It is suggested patients take at least 2-3 weeks off from work to recover from the procedure. However, some women feel they are fit for work in as little as 1 week. Strenuous exercise or activities are to be avoided for 3 to 6 weeks.
